Folks…

To quote the producer of The Godfather, Robert Evans: «There are three sides to every story: Your side, my side, and the truth. There were lots of questions about last week’s announcements. Audrey was speaking about only one half of the story, (her half), so for everyone who asked, here’s the other side. Then you can make up your own mind about the truth.
Of course, I agree it’s a massive shame to put the brakes on touring right now, but the truth is, making a film is a huge undertaking, and the window of opportunity only opens very briefly, and waits for no one. I’ve been working in film for ten years now, and despite some set backs, and a couple of very disappointing experiences, film has remained a passion and a major part of my life. The band were always aware of this, but that didn’t stop it being a disappointment when the schedules clashed so titanically.
I really, really, REALLY appreciate the amazing support that the fans have given us on this record, and wish we could come and play in everyone’s front lounge for FREE, but alas, despite the 21st century being well under way, holographic technology is still sadly lacking. As you might expect however, music is an important part of making a film, and my friends were always expected to be involved. Anyway, I’m sure the other guys will write something to you all at some point.
In the meantime, there’s going to be a movie, which is going to be totally fuckin’ awwwwsome, further details of which will be announced as things move forward. And, if we can all just keep our cool and make love not war, there’ll be more music to come too.

Dear Folks,

Big thanks for all the love and support that Pilgrims Progress has been given; it’s come generously, and sometimes quite unexpectedly, from all over the world. It had been a while since Strangefolk, so we didn’t know which way it would go. We’ve all been totally blown away.

Looking ahead, the good news is there’s a movie project definitely in the pipes, due to start early next year. The flip side, however, (yea- you know there’s always a flip, with this pesky duality business- life/death, day/night, weed/brain damage), the flip is that we have to postpone touring for a while. We’ve had masses of requests for the band to perform all over the world, so we’re really sorry. The gigs so far have been amazing, so thanks to everyone who came along and sang Peter Pan R.I.P at the top of their voices.

Apologies also that this announcement has taken a while, (though, surely you folks must used to it by now?), schedules being what they are, the decision has been hanging in the balance for a couple of months, waiting for news on the flick. Moving forward, there will be exciting things happening, and of course, more detailed information as things roll forward with the film, so we’ll stay hooked up on the website.

Kula Shaker frontman, Crispian Mills, also known as Krishna Kantha Dasa to some, speaks to Nicholas Shay ahead of his band’s tour through Hong Kong.

HK Magazine: Will this be your first time in Hong Kong? What are you expecting?
Crispian Mills: It will indeed, and everybody’s thrilled to be coming. It’s uncharted waters, so I have no idea what to expect. We went to Russia last year for the first time to play a concert, and we went on stage very late to a huge, very drunk crowd. It was quite frightening, but once we got on stage, it was fantastic—so you never know what to expect.

HK: Can you tell us about your new album, “Pilgrim’s Progress”?
CM: This was the first time we made a record where we had absolutely no pressure other than our own desire to make beautiful music. Our first record, “K,” was complicated because we could feel the record company’s expectations, which stifled the spontaneity. When you’re young, you’re more inclined to please people... well, I was. Now I’ve given up trying to please people, and ended up making a good record as a result. It’s a very mellow acoustic album with lots of daydreaming. The process was much more spontaneous than our other records. It’s brilliant, I’m telling you.

HK: Where do the band’s Indian influences stem from?
CM: I don’t know. Maybe from past lives... friends, fate and destiny. There is something very universal about oriental culture, and we can connect with it. I think it’s because the people of the earth were all joined together at one time.

HK: Could you explain a bit about your own spiritual beliefs?
CM: Everybody wants love, don’t they? If you have all the money and power in the world, and you don’t have love, you’re just gonna be a weird psycho. And that’s really the problem with the world. Spiritual life should be practical, not superstitious. You should be able to apply it to your life, in healing the earth and healing each other, because it’s all in a bit of a mess. You have to respect all faiths; you have to have a spiritual philosophy. I try to have that in my life, and it’s been very good for my music and self-expression.

HK: Who are some people that you gather inspiration from?
CM: I kind of live in a bit of a dream world. I read all the old myths and legends. When I was growing up, my favorite books were all the ancient Greek myths. I got into Indian folklore and the philosophy of the Mahabharata. I’m into archetypes and mythic heroes. I like George Harrison and Ritchie Blackmore from Deep Purple. He’s a great guitarist, but they’re just guys. When it’s an inspiration or a muse, I think more of those mythic characters. They’re more colorful.

HK: If you had a dinner party, which three guests would you invite?
CM: Well, I would probably get Charles Dickens and Shakespeare together with somebody like Johnny Rotten and see what happens.
